Save Your Energy

It's (gas) fireplace season. Is your carbon monoxide detector placed correctly and tested?

Having a carbon monoxide detector only helps if it's installed in the right location, and there are some misconceptions about what the "right location" is. While these detectors do not need to be installed near the floor (carbon monoxide is not heavier than air!), doing so can be helpful if the detector needs to be plugged into an outlet, which tend to be near the floor. Likewise, some have screens that need to be at a low enough height that you can read them. Apart from these considerations, it's most important to simply install these detectors near the bedrooms and away from bathrooms (which can get humid) and fuel-burning and cooking appliances (which may release small amounts of carbon monoxide when started or turned on). When in doubt, double-check your specific detector's instructions for guidance. The more you know!
